Vasco da Gama was charged with finding a maritime route to India.
Players play the part of rich shipowners who, under his patronage, aim to achieve prestige and riches. To succeed in the enterprise, they must manage the money and actions at their disposal in order to hire captains, recruit crew, build Ships, launch them and send them to the Landings of Natal, Terra de Boa Gente, Mozambique, Malindi, Mombasa and Calicut.
For each Ship sent, Players will receive an immediate reward and will gain prestige (Victory Points). The further the Ship is sent, the lower the compensation, but the higher the victory score that the Player will earn.
Ships at Landings that are "complete" at the end of the Round (i.e. reached by a certain number of Ships) will earn further Victory Points for their owners and will then advance, under certain conditions, to the next Landing. This creates the opportunity to earn again Victory Points in the following Rounds.
During each Round, Players take actions in various Areas (Navigation, Recruiting, Purchase Projects or Characters). Planning is fundamental: The right to take an Action could be free of charge or paid for.
The earlier a Player plans to take an Action, the more likely that he will have to pay for it. Players will have to ask themselves if and how much they are ready to pay for the right to act first in a certain area.
Vasco da Gama himself will decide which is the first free of charge Action for each Round. He will also help some of the Players by making some money available to them.
This great maritime enterprise raises the interest of 4 influential Characters. Aiming to have a substantial role in the development of the new commercial route, they will also provide their favors free of charge to the Players.

The game begins with a single town tile. Players place tiles to expand the board by creating networks and building new towns, which produce new goods that need to be delivered. Each tile a player places also generates steam for moving his train. When the time is right, players move their trains to pick up and deliver goods from town to town to earn points. But, of course it is not that easy since hills require extra steam to cross and speeding around curves may cause your train to derail! Bonus points are awarded for delivering different kinds of goods and building circuits of track between towns.

China, 2000 years ago. Loyang has risen to become the capital of the Han Dynasty and one of the four main capitals of ancient China. In the booming economic climate, the people of this flourishing city require an improved supply of basic foodstuffs. These are supplied by local farmers who grow wheat, pumpkins, turnips, cabbage, beans and leeks in their fields.
After each harvest, the farmers regularly meet at the gates of Loyang to trade their produce. They make deliveries to their regular customers and sell vegetables to casual customers for lucrative profit. But vegetables can also be bartered at market stalls or used as seed to plant new fields. If the farmers need vegetables which they don't have on hand, they can buy them at their shop.
Twenty different kinds of helpers, each with different skills, are available to assist them. These helpers allow players to employ a wide range of strategies and tactics.
The most successful farmer will be the one who makes the most progress on the Path of Prosperity within the given timeframe. Each step along the path costs money -- less to begin with, increasingly higher amounts later on. But money is also needed for investments -- so it is crucial to strike the right balance.
Although easy to learn, At the Gates of Loyang is a challenging economic game for 1 to 4 players.
